This is where the northern entrance to the Zingaro Nature Reserve (Riserva naturale orientata dello Zingaro) is located. It stretches along one of the most scenic stretches of coastline between Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito lo Capo. "When the construction of a road along one of the most scenic coastal stretches from Castellammare del Golfo to San Vito lo Capo was planned at the end of the 1970s, there were considerable civil protests. The government then gave in and established the first nature reserve, Zingaro, on May 6, 1981 in Sicily. The reserve covers 1600 hectares and an approximately 7 km long coastal strip with small sandy bays and rough limestone cliffs. The highest elevation is Monte Speziale at 914 m. The karst area is crossed by rugged limestone cliffs and gullies washed out by water. The Mediterranean flora is characterized by olive and carob trees as well as dwarf palms (Chamaerops humilis) and provides a habitat for around 40 different bird species. Hawks, vultures and eagles find ideal living conditions here." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riserva_naturale_orientata_dello_Zingaro

Easy tour if approached in the right periods, I would exclude the very hot months in addition to the heat it is frequented by many people. The equipment must include trekking shoes or at least gym shoes no sneakers lots of water a hat and those who prefer poles can help if you take the high route, for the rest have a good walk.

Zingaro Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro is a real treasure for hikers who want to embark on a journey of discovery along the Sicilian coast. The approximately 7-kilometer-long path winds through untouched nature, past breathtaking limestone formations and hidden bays with crystal-clear water. The variety of landscapes is impressive - from the dense vegetation with dwarf palms to the rocky cliffs that drop dramatically into the turquoise sea.

If you decide to take the path, be aware that there are no comfortable coastal roads that lead you through the reserve. This is what makes the Zingaro so charming - the wilderness remains untouched here. It is worth starting early, especially in midsummer, as the sun can be merciless in the midday hours. Sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential in your backpack.

It is also interesting that this nature reserve emerged from a fight against the construction of a coastal road. Thanks to the commitment of the population, the Zingaro was designated as the first nature reserve in Sicily in 1981. It is a symbol of resistance and love of nature that is still protected and cared for today.

Although a fire destroyed large parts of the reserve in 2012, nature is slowly recovering. Particularly impressive is Monte Speziale, the highest elevation of the Zingaro, from which you can see as far as San Vito Lo Capo in good weather.

The path along the coast is not a strenuous mountain tour, but an impressive hike through a piece of nature that is unparalleled in its pristine state.
