Castillo de la Luz

Highlight • Castle

Originally the fort was located on a reef, isolating itself from the tide, but the city's continued development has resulted in it being located on the mainland and is currently more than 150 meters from the sea.

It was built on a wooden fortress built by Captain Juan Rejón when the conquest of the Canary Islands began in 1478. Different phases were incorporated depending on the defense needs. Firstly, the medieval-style square tower known as Torre de Alonso Fajardo. A surrounding defensive bastion was then built around 1515 and expanded a few years later. In 1553 it received some additions and was rebuilt after the fire of 1599 caused by the Dutch army led by Pieter van der Does. Finally, in the last third of the 17th century, the external structure that can be seen today was built.

Santa Catalina Park

Highlight • Rest Area

Santa Catalina Park, in the heart of Las Palmas, offers plenty of opportunities for locals and visitors. It is lined with cafes and shops and often hosts street markets and pop-up festivals. Large palm trees and colourful flowerbeds add to the beauty of the public square, which is also a great place to just sit and watch people go by. The park is also busy at night - in the evenings it buzzes with nightlife, with bars, clubs and discos.
The park is also home to the Museo de la Ciencia (Science Museum) and the Edificio Miller (Miller Building). In summer, it hosts Carnival and the Dance and Theatre Festival.
There is also a small playground suitable for young children.
