Signage on the Camino de Santiago is essential for pilgrims.
Yellow arrows: These arrows will guide you throughout the entire route. They indicate the direction to follow, especially at crossroads. The yellow color is due to the contribution of the parish priest Elías Valiña, a key figure in the resurgence of the Camino de Santiago in the 20th century.
Cairns or milestones: These concrete blocks include an arrow, a yellow shell on a blue background and the distance in kilometers to Santiago de Compostela. You will find them every 500 meters in Galicia.
Scallop shells: In addition to being drawn on the markers, scallop shells are distributed throughout the Camino. They are universal symbols and have been carried by pilgrims for centuries. The open part of the shell indicates the direction towards Santiago.
Good way! 🚶‍♂️🌟

Church of Our Lady of Mercy of Conxo

Highlight • Religious Site

The convent of the order of the Mercede of Santa María de Conxo, is currently home to the Provicial Psychiatric Hospital. It dates back to the time of Gelmírez, of which only two Romanesque arches of the cloister and an epigraph relating to the foundation dated 1129 AD remain. Of quadrangular plan, it is erected with granite-cut stone walls with the current façade of the eighteenth century designed by Simón Rodríguez. It is structured in two floors and among its walls only the portery stands out (Fernández Sarela, XVIII century), surrounded by columns of the Tuscan order, finished with cylinders, on which the entablature rests, under a balcony and the mercedary coat of arms; it is also embellished with figures of saints belonging to the aforementioned order. On the left is the church where Fra Gabriel de Casas worked between 1693 and 1710 and Simón Rodríguez between 1729 and 1737. They intervened on the façade, in the cloister and in the chapel of the Holy Christ. The latter shows a sculpture of Jesus Crucified by Gregorio Fernández (1628). Of Latin cross plan, the temple has a transept, side chapels equipped with tribune, roofs with barrel vaults and half-sphere domes (square in shape on the outside) and a four-sloping roof. The interior altarpieces are works by Simón Rodríguez (1735).
