Pinkafeld

Highlight • Settlement

Pinkafeld, a beautiful town in the Oberwart district of Burgenland, currently has a population of 5,890 (as of January 1, 2025). The town is idyllically situated on the Pinka River, which also bears Pinkafeld's name. With a history dating back to the Neolithic period, Pinkafeld was an important artisan town in the Middle Ages, where important privileges such as market and toll rights were obtained.

In the 18th century, the economy flourished, primarily thanks to the cloth makers and leather workers who shaped the town's activities. Today, the HTL Pinkafeld, the largest vocational school in Burgenland, is a central part of the educational landscape. Politically, Pinkafeld is under the leadership of Mayor Kurt Maczek and Vice Mayor Adrian Kubat of the SPÖ.

Residents can access the Geminfo app, which offers useful information about the municipality, service providers, and restaurants. This way, you can always stay up to date on everything happening in Pinkafeld!

The parish church in the center is the old mother church of the district. From 1773 to 1774 was a new building. The church was consecrated in 1786 with Bishop Johann Szily from the diocese of Szombathely. The completion with complete equipment (organ around 1800) of the church was in 1807. A restoration of the interior and the interior of the church was done in 1888 with the painter and carpenter Johann Rohrer from Pinkafeld. A total restoration took place in 1956; a painting in 1963.

Main Square Pinkafeld

Highlight • Settlement

The creation of the column dates back to the year 1700 as a votive building on the occasion of the end of the Great Turkish War and the associated, final defense against the danger that emanated from the campaigns of the Ottoman Empire for Central Europe.

The story of the Marian Column is related to the Hungarian noble family Batthyány, who resided in the Batthyány Castle in Pinkafeld. The noble family had the column renovated several times in the 19th century.

The oldest surviving structure in Pinkafeld is the Rindsmaullsche Gutshaus, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century and from 1629 was owned by the Rindsmaull family, originally from Tyrol. In 1728 the Pinkafeld community acquired the house and used it as the town hall until 1954. In addition, the district court with jurisdiction over Pinkafeld, Sinnersdorf, Ober- and Unterwald farmers was housed in the old manor house. The jurisdiction was lost after 1848. In 1830 the last judgment was made in the Rindsmaullschen Gutshaus. The pillory from the 17th century can still be seen in front of the house as a symbol of jurisdiction. From 1954 the house was used for residential purposes and later as a municipal kindergarten; In the basement were the facilities of the local freezing community. Since 1989, after the kindergarten moved into the newly constructed building, the Pinkafelder City Museum has been located in the building.

Pinkafeld boasts a whole series of shrines that remind us of the history and traditions of our region. These small stone crosses or chapels are often located at crossroads or in places where something important happened. Each shrine tells its own story: whether in memory of a deceased person or as atonement for a misfortune. They are a part of our traditions and encourage us to reflect on the past. It's worth pausing at such a place and enjoying the silence.
