Church of St. Joseph, Untergurgl

Highlight • Religious Site

Church of St. Joseph, Angern / Untergurgl
The chapel in Untergurgl was built in 1955 as a barrel-vaulted, rectangular prayer room according to plans by Anton Pohl. The tower consists of an octagonal upper floor with an onion dome. On the barrel vault, on the left, the Adoration of the Magi and the Bethlehemian infanticide are depicted, while on the right, the death of Joseph is shown with depictions of his life and the view of St. Peter's Square in Rome. These paintings are by Karl Obleitner, as is a ceramic panel with Mary and child facing backwards on the left wall.

Timmelsjoch Pass Sign

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße
In the rear Ötztal, the Alps feature a "secret gap" – the Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße. The road pass at 2,474 m has presumably been an important connecting axis between North and South since the Stone Age. Today, excursionists no longer have to trudge laboriously over the pass, but can cruise by car or motorcycle on the Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße from Obergurgl into the South Tyrolean Passeiertal valley. The highest pass crossing in the Eastern Alps opens up spectacular views of the high alpine nature for travellers – and marks the unique Timmelsjoch experience with 6 adventure stations.
The road is open. Opening hours: daily from 07:00-20:00.

Passo del Rombo / Timmelsjoch (2,509 m)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Timmelsjoch is undoubtedly one of the most impressive places in the Ötztal: far the rugged mountains open all the way down to the valley and the wind slowly drives the clouds over the peaks. The Timmelsjoch is the highest road in the Alps, and in the summer countless cyclists fight their way up the countless serpentines.

At the top of the Joch is also a small inn, in which both hikers and cyclists can strengthen.
