Alfenz Cycle Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Alfenz bicycle bridge, Lorüns since 2011
The bicycle path bridge over the Alfenz, filigree half-timbered construction in concrete
Concrete and design
Bridges are elements of connection and deserve special design attention. The state of Vorarlberg is committed to its modern and contemporary architecture and tries to promote and implement this in the area of infrastructure and in places with sensitive landscapes
With the Marte. Marte architectural firm from Weiler, a local and at the same time internationally renowned partner with many years of experience in concrete construction and design was gained. The Marte. Marte team of architects has already proven several times in recent years with extraordinary bridge constructions that concrete and its special design options can contribute to enriching the landscape (see Cement + Concrete, issue 2/09: Schanerloch Bridge, Dornbirn). Nevertheless, at the beginning of the planning process it was necessary to explore various materials for bridge construction and to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages. As part of the preliminary project, wood, steel and reinforced concrete were examined in more detail. The lessons of the past have shown that the immediate proximity to busy roads leads to increased maintenance costs for wooden bridges, as the combination of spray mist, de-icing salts and exhaust gas cocktails damages the junctions of the individual wooden rods and their connecting structures. A pure steel structure was not an option, as the risk of sparks, particularly in fog, appeared to be too high due to the numerous high-voltage lines in the area. For this reason, the line operator rejected steel as a material, and the choice fell on reinforced concrete as the ideal material for exposed locations such as this. A total of 33 tons of steel were processed.

Baroque church Bartholomäberg

Highlight • Religious Site

The parish church of St. Bartholomew in Bartholomäberg is a beautiful baroque church. It is the oldest and most beautiful village church in the state of Vorarlberg. The location, the architecture and the important art treasures from Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque times speak for this.

Innerberg Village

Highlight • Settlement

Innerberg is, so to speak, the highest point of the panoramic road, from here it goes downhill towards Bartholomäberg or in the opposite direction to Silbertal, and uphill to Kristberg.
