St. Jodok Minster, Schruns

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish church of St. Jodok, Schruns
The parish church of Schruns was elevated to a cathedral church. In order to be considered for elevation to the Minster Church, various criteria must be met. The spiritual significance of a church for a region is one of them. “The parish church of Schruns has great importance for the religious life of the region. This fact is taken into account by elevating it to a cathedral church,” says Bishop Benno Elbs. With the elevation to the cathedral church is the hope that the Schruns parish church will become another important place of spiritual and pastoral life in Vorarlberg.
The church was built in 1865. It contains neo-Romanesque altars, paintings in the Nazarene style and numerous pictures (on both sides of the high altar, on the choir ceiling) by Franz and Jakob Bertle from the Schruns Bertle painting family. Hans Bertle (son of Jakob Bertle) created five ceiling paintings in the nave and the medallions above the windows. The carpenter Anton Bertle and the sculptor Ignaz Bertle are responsible for the execution of the pulpit.

Schruns Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

History of the market town of Schruns
In 1433 the church is called St. Josen zu Schruns. From 1579 Schruns is a separate parish, but the entire area of the Ausserlitz remained with Bartholomäberg for a longer period of time.
In 1622 Schruns was sacked by troops. The plague killed many people in 1629 and in the severe avalanche winter of 1689 there were four deaths on the Stiefen. In 1682 the parish church burned down. Since this happened in the middle of the day, the surrounding houses could be saved.
In 1696 the craftsmen's guild of the valley was founded in Schruns and Ulrich Marent was appointed as the first guild master. In 1754 Schruns already had 1230 inhabitants. In 1762 the rivers Ill and Litz devastated the fields of the village in a great flood. 20 houses fell victim to the floods. After long efforts, Schruns was given its own court in 1775 and at the same time the right to hold markets.
Between 1796 and 1799 Schruns was in distress. Local riflemen under Landammann Batlogg took part in battles against Napoleon's troops near Feldkirch and the Schlappinerjoch. In 1800 the place was occupied. From 1805 to 1814 the Montafon belonged to Bavaria. At that time the valley road was built through Schruns. In 1867 the current, recently built church is occupied. The local artist family Bertle worked on the decoration of the church even later.
The first holidaymakers came to Schruns around 1870 and it began to develop as a tourist destination. Gradually, the first hotels were built and in 1905 the Montafonerbahn opened, which is operated by the previously built power station on the Litz. By 1900 Schruns already had around 350 inhabited houses, and this number increased significantly by the First World War. In 1910 Schruns reached the number of around 1,600 inhabitants that it had already had around 1850. In 1928 Schruns was officially raised to a market town.

Hochjochbahn Schruns

Highlight • Structure

Hochjoch Bahn, Schruns
The Hochjoch is 2520 m above sea level. A. high mountain with two weakly pronounced summit humps. In 1913 there were first plans to build a railway on the Schrunser Kapell. In autumn 1945, the two Schruns Josef Thöni and Albert Zudrell as well as the alpine writer Walther Flaig proposed the construction of a cable car from Schruns over the Kapellalpe to the Kreuzjoch summit at an altitude of 2395 m.
In 1948 the Montafoner Bergbahn GmbH was founded. In 1950, the "Vier Jahreszeitenbahn" was able to open up to the Kapell (1855 m) and in 1951 the second section (Kropfen – Kapellalpe) was put into operation. Initially, this was a chair lift and in 1966 a cable car with four pendulum cabins (basically changing at the Kropfen middle station) was built on the chapel.
The Grasjoch area has also been opened up since 1980 and further opportunities for ascent have been created with the Zamangbahn from Schruns and the Kapellbahn from Silbertal.
The Sennigratbahn chairlift, which is also in operation in summer, leads from the mountain station (Kapell) of the Hochjochbahn to the almost 2,300 m high Sennigrat. From there you need another 15 to 20 minutes on a well-developed hiking trail with little difference in altitude to the Wormser Hut.
