Basilica of Mariazell

Mariazell Basilica

Legend tells the following founding story:

In 1157, Abbot Otker of the Benedictine monastery of St. Lambrecht sent a monk named Magnus to the Mariazell area, which belonged to the monastery. This monk was to provide pastoral care for the people living there. With the abbot's permission, he was allowed to take his linden wood statue of Mary with him on the long journey.

On the evening of December 21st, a boulder blocked his path near his destination. Magnus prayed to the Virgin Mary for help, whereupon the rock split open, clearing the way. Upon reaching his destination, the monk placed the statue on a tree stump and began to build a "cell," which served as both a chapel and his own living quarters. "Mary in the Cell" gave the place its name.

The statue of Mary became a famous image of grace, still venerated today as Magna Mater Austriae, the Great Mother of Austria.

Excursion ship "Christina" on Lake Erlauf
Since summer 2019, you have had the opportunity to explore Lake Erlauf on a centuries-old, but completely restored excursion ship. The ship was named "Christina" and has space for around 70 passengers on its open deck and two salons.

Erlaufsee
The Erlaufsee (formerly also Erlafsee) is a mountain lake at the foot of the Gemeindealpe not far from the town of Mitterbach am Erlaufsee. The border between Lower Austria and Styria runs through the lake. It is located on the Zellerrain road from Mariazell to Lunz am See. In the summer months, the lake can be reached from Mariazell on the Mariazell-Erlaufsee museum tram, which is operated with historic steam tram sets. It has a natural bathing beach on the south bank (gravel). The Erlauf flows through the lake. The lake's large fish population includes perch, pike, char, rudd, brown trout and rainbow trout.
On the shore there is a restaurant, a snack bar, a campsite, a boat rental and a diving school. Tours on excursion boats are also offered on the lake. The Erlaufsee should not be confused with the Erlauf reservoir, which is about 4.5 km away and downstream of the Erlauf.

Museum tramway Mariazell - Erlaufsee
The route between Mariazell and Erlaufsee is not an abandoned railway line that has been reactivated for museum operations. It was completely rebuilt between 1976 and 2015 and even the tracks were built by the activists of the museum tramway as a voluntary effort. The building elements used are intended to reflect the history of the technology of Austrian street and local railway companies. In recognition of these achievements, the Austrian Railway Culture Prize was awarded in 2018 by the ÖMT Association of Austrian Museum and Tourist Railways.
