Brunngasse, Brienz

Highlight • Historical Site

Brungasse, Brienz
Brienz is located at the eastern, upper end of the turquoise Lake Brienz. Known as the village of carvers, Brienz with its old buildings has a long tradition in woodworking and has a carving school and a violin making school.
Probably the most romantic part of Brienz is Brunngasse, which is well-known beyond the country's borders and was once voted the "most beautiful alley in Europe". Most of the houses in the alley date from the 18th century and are decorated with carvings. Due to its location and the balancing effect of the lake, Brienz enjoys a mild mountain climate in both summer and winter.
Brienz lies at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn (2,350 m above sea level) and is home to the valley station of the steep cog railway to the panorama and hiking mountain in the triangle formed by the cantons of Bern, Lucerne and Obwalden. The trains are still being pushed up the Rothorn by hissing steam locomotives, a very special experience.
Only a few meters separate the stations of the Brienz-Rothorn-Bahn, the Brünigbahn and the BLS-Schiffsbetriebe. Brienz is on the Brünigbahn narrow-gauge railway line, which connects Interlaken, Brienz, Meiringen, Brünig, Lucerne and Engelberg. And in Brienz, the boat courses from Interlaken also end, e.g. with the historic saloon paddle steamer "Lötschberg", which - carefully restored - represents the ideal complement to the steam journey up the Rothorn. Incidentally, a steam train also runs on the Brünigbahn route on selected dates.
Walks along the traffic-free Brienz lake promenade, past small boat harbors and playgrounds, are popular. In summer, locals and guests alike come together to have a swim at the lake shore. The view over the lake with the constantly changing moods, the steep bank opposite and the Giessbach waterfall is worthwhile.
In the nearby Ballenberg open-air museum, a look into the kitchens, chambers, living rooms and workshops of the authentically built houses and courtyards of rural Switzerland from the 16th to 19th centuries proves that this is not a dusty collection of rarities, but that experiences are guaranteed.
