Saltina Bridge, Brig
In 1993, the Saltina, a stream from the Simplon region that flows into the Rhone in Brig, burst its banks, causing one of the worst storm disasters in Switzerland. The "jumping" (lat. saltare) brought with it huge amounts of rubble, which was subsequently deposited throughout the city center and damaged countless buildings and their facilities up to ground floor level. In the area of the train station and the Rhonesand district, the dammed water created a bizarre lake landscape that had to be navigated by boat. Two people were killed; given the massive natural eruption, there could have been many more.
Since then, Brig-Glis has commemorated the tragic event every year on September 24th with a memorial service. The flood hit Brig-Glis unexpectedly, as it had been more than 70 years since the Saltina last made its unbridled power felt. The clearance and repair work, which was supported by a great deal of solidarity across Switzerland, lasted around a year.
The result is, among other things, a newly designed city center, which had been badly damaged with the exception of the old castle. At the same time, the opportunity was taken to significantly enlarge the area around the town square and make it traffic-free; today this area is very busy. Events of all kinds are held here regularly and the weekly farmers' market on Saturdays is an integral part of the cityscape.
A new bridge was built over the Saltina, which can be raised by the weight of the water using a hydraulic system. Since then, the innovative bridge has protected the residential area of Brig-Glis together with a number of other flood protection measures.
