Pumpwerk Wilhelmshaven

Highlight • Structure

The pumping station is a former industrial structure and now a cultural center in Wilhelmshaven. The then head of the building department and current professor for architectural history, Ingo Sommer [1] saved it from demolition in 1975 and had the idea of redesigning it into a socio-cultural center. He also developed the concept, designs and renovation plans. It was completed in 1976 and variously expanded according to his plans.

A so-called troop crew bunker.
Troop crew bunkers were air raid shelters built by the Kriegsmarine during the air war in World War II from 1943 onwards to protect naval personnel and shipyard workers from Allied air raids.

Banter Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Long before Lake Banter existed, a church stood here in the Middle Ages. It was located in front of the dike line and was therefore built on a mound. On January 16, 1511, a storm and ice drift from the devastating St. Anthony's Flood destroyed the church. It was not rebuilt. The debris was used elsewhere. The granite blocks were used for an extension to the Neuender Church, and the timber was used for the construction of the Maadesiel.
