City of Caen

Highlight • Settlement

Located only twenty kilometers from the English Channel and the landing beaches, Caen is also the City of William the Conqueror. This is evidenced by the imposing Ladies' Abbey, the Men's Abbey and the castle, all three built at the beginning of the 11th century.

Be sure to visit the Caen Memorial, designed to commemorate the Battle of Normandy. You will also surely enjoy a stroll through the small streets of the Vaugueux district, where Edith Piaf's family lived. There you will find many friendly restaurants serving traditional cuisine.

Bénouville Castle

Highlight • Castle

Bénouville Castle was built from 1768 to 1785 by the Marquis de Livry. For most of the 20th century, the castle served as an orphanage and then the regional chamber of accounts moved there in 1990. Since then, it is possible to visit the castle and the exhibitions it houses.

Pegasus Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Just after midnight on the night of June 5-6, the two bridges of Ranville-Bénouville were captured by the British 5th Parachute Brigade after a short battle. Pegasus was their emblem. A small part of France was liberated. Major Howard had won the Battle of Pegasus and those in need had a field for gliders to land on, a movable steel bridge, a house on the water's edge, and... the Gondrée family, who at 11 a.m. saw Lord Lovat (1911- 1995) and his 'Green Berets' arrive, to the sound of a bagpipe. Now café-museum Gondrée is a meeting point for veterans and tourists. (Michelin)

A short loop through Caen, managing to pick off some of the impressive older parts as well as the pretty nice newer parts.

Easy and low-stress to cycle through the city.

from the station (near my Point A), one could just follow the Orne and take the Voie Verte (Greenway) all the way to Ouistreham.
