Martinengo Castle

Highlight • Castle

It was built, albeit with a primordial aspect, at the end of 300 by Bartolomeo III, governor of Parma, Piacenza and Cremona. This beautiful building can be considered more a palace than a fortress, although with towers and a drawbridge it was built for residential purposes, later remodeled between 1450 and 1530. It is presumed however that it was built, as for most of the castles located especially in the plains, on previous fortifications inside the ancient "castrum". Residence of Marcantonio Martinengo (1546) who, in the service of Venice, distinguished himself in the battle of Lepanto, the scene of wars and family betrayals, as well as loves and incest at court, it passed ownership several times to the various descendants of the family until the second half of the 18th century, a period in which a Martinengo lived there for the last time.

Padernello Castle

Highlight • Castle

Padernello is a small fraction of the municipality of San Giacomo. A small and splendid rural village (castellodipadernello.it/it/). The Castle dates back to the end of the 14th century and was built by the Martinengo nobles (who also owned the Villachiara castle), a family of origin from the Bergamo area and linked to the Republic of Venice. Unfortunately, for years after the death of the last owner who resided there, it was abandoned, to be taken over by a foundation in the early 2000s.

This bridge made only of intertwined logs is very particular. Warning! With a gravel bike it is much better to ride it with a hand-held bike.

The trail, which runs alongside the Canale Civico Cremonese, is straight and uneven, running through fields and rows of vines on a dirt surface. Stable and even, it's a perfect stretch for gravel and touring bikes.

Tombe Morte (and 13 bridges)

Highlight • Structure

Important hydraulic junction and meeting point between various dirt paths that allow you to discover the area by bike. You cannot get here by motorized means. This area is full of fun dirt roads, to be discovered slowly! Following the Vacchelli and then the Naviglio Cremonese, you can easily get to Cremona!

Canale Vacchelli Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

The Pietro Vacchelli canal, formerly Canale Marzano from the locality where the water intake from the Adda river is located, flows from west to east in the Middle Lombardy Plain and constitutes the largest hydraulic work for irrigation in the territory of the province of Cremona. Built by the Cremonesi Irrigazioni Consortium between 1887 and 1892, on the proposal of the engineer. Pietro Vacchelli (whose name he took after his death in 1913), with the aim of resolving the serious agricultural crisis of the second half of the 19th century caused by backward cultivation systems.
It, in an almost exclusively straight path, transports 38.5 cubic meters of water per second up to the locality "Tombe Morte", in the Municipality of Genivolta, where its waters join those derived from the Oglio river.
