View of the Arno River and the village of Capolona

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Arno river is one of the most important waterways in central Italy, which originates from Mount Falterona and flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. From the Capolona bridge you can admire the beauty of the surrounding landscape, with the houses of the ancient village dominating the river banks.

Church of Saint Michael the Archangel

Highlight • Religious Site

Known in the fourteenth century with the name of Sant'Angelo in Fabriciano, on the right side stands the bell tower with a clock that replaces an older bell tower.
The interior with a nave preserves a wooden group depicting the Madonna and Child, heavily repainted and perhaps coming from the nearby abbey of Capolona. The sculpture is surrounded by a series of 15 panels painted with the Mysteries of the Rosary from Vasari from the second half of the sixteenth century.
The facade of this small brick church is really beautiful. Internally it is simple, almost modern. A stop for a visit is undoubtedly recommended.

Monks' Lock

Highlight • Structure

The first weir at this point was already built in 1115 by the monks. Since then, it regulated the water flow from the water flowing from the Val di Chiana through the Canale Maestro into the Arno. Because of various floods and depressions of the channel, it was repeatedly destroyed or demolished and then repaired or rebuilt. Most of the visible remains of the building date back to the beginning of the 19th century. It was in operation until 1943 when it was destroyed by bombs and not rebuilt.
