... at a great meeting of like-minded geocachers, we explored this beautiful little town of ELBURG and had a lot of fun here. There is sooo much to see, to discover and also a lot of to-do's for us cachers 🍀 We will definitely come back sometime... 😎

Elburg town centre

Highlight • Settlement

A small town with a great atmosphere.
There are probably only 2 main streets that form a cross in Elburg.

The former Hanseatic city of Elburg is a beautiful place located on the Randmeren. The rectangular street plan dates from the Middle Ages and you will find no less than 250 monuments here, such as ramparts, canals and pieces of city wall.

Great or St. Nicholas Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The church was founded in 1396 when the town was moved inland, and was completed around 1450. The patron saint is Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. It is a three-aisled pseudo-basilica with masonry cross rib vaults. The church has been in Protestant hands since around 1580. The oak choir screen and two choir stalls date from before the Reformation.

In 1693 the spire was struck by lightning, after which it burned down to the masonry. The spire was not restored afterwards, but the tower was covered with a flat roof, which is still the case. In 1797 it was decided to cover the frescoes in the church with white lime. These frescoes reappeared during the restoration from 1971 to 1975.

The church's organ was built in 1825 by Heinrich Quellhorst. There has also been a choir organ since 1974.

The church is in use by the Reformed Municipality of Elburg.

Agnieten Convent, Elburg

Highlight • Religious Site

If there is a building in the center of Elburg that you should not miss, it is the Agnietenklooster. This beautiful monastery was built in the first half of the 15th century. The specific year cannot be determined with certainty, but there are indications that this would have been in 1425. One thing is certain: the building has had all kinds of uses since its foundation. Where it was a women's monastery in the beginning, it later became a city auditorium, it has been a school and finally a town hall. Are you looking for a special location to get married? Then you can do it here today!

Elburg Synagogue

Highlight • Religious Site

The synagogue of Elburg was founded in 1855. It also bears the name 'Sjoel Elburg'. The building in which the synagogue is located was built earlier, in the 16th century. A fun fact: there was already a small Jewish community in Elburg in the 18th century, but the differences between the members were too great to jointly found a synagogue. Only when the disputes were settled in the second half of the 19th century, this synagogue was founded. Today, the location serves as a museum, where you can learn everything about how the Jews lived in Gelderland.
