Dolmen D53

Highlight • Historical Site

Dolmen D53 is the third largest dolmen in the Netherlands, measuring about 18 meters long. The dolmen is almost complete and is beautifully situated on the edge of the heath. However, it was taken apart by the German air force during the Second World War to make room for an airfield. Fortunately, there were drawings and the dolmen was reassembled after the war.

D53 is located next to the smaller dolmen D54.

View of burial mounds in Holtingerveld

Highlight • Historical Site

In the immediate vicinity of the Havelterberg numerous burial mounds, grave fields and urn fields have been found that were used to bury the dead in the Bronze Age and early and late Iron Age (5000 - 2500 years ago). Research in 1918 and 1944, conducted by A.E. van Giffen, has shown that two burial mounds on the crest of the Havelterberg date from the Iron Age. The associated residential area and the characteristic rectangular fields from that time, the Celtic fields, extend on the southern flank of the Havelterberg. Unfortunately, a large part of this has now disappeared as a result of previous reclamation and the construction of a German airfield during the Second World War.

The 'Herdenkingsmonument 1944' in Kallenkote, located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, serves as a memorial for six citizens who actively or passively resisted the occupying forces during the Second World War. On October 13, 1944, they were executed by the occupying forces without any form of trial. The six victims were F.H. ten Berge, H.G. Bos, U. de Jong, P. Schipper, E. Verveer and J.A. deVries.

This morning started well. Being able to pack the tent dry. I quickly passed the dolmen, the D53. After this, via small forest paths past Jeroen's home base, the Johannes Postkazerne. It was very quiet at the Barracks.
Then coffee at Maargies Hoeve, a care farm for the disabled.
Of course I took a look around the farm. Two hard-working …
