Rumbeke Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle of Rumbeke is located in the provincial domain Sterrebos (27 ha). In the 18th century, the building was renovated in a classical style, with the Sterrebos being laid out using the Friar of Vienna as a model. According to legend, Boudewijn I fled with the Iron Arm, Count of Flanders, in 862 together with Judith, daughter of Emperor Charles the Bald, to the castle that stood here at the time. After the intervention of the Pope, this led to a marriage and the creation of the County of Flanders. The castle was inhabited for centuries by the counts de Thiennes and de Limburg Stirum. It was damaged by the Beggars and ravaged during the Wars of Louis XIV, the French Revolution and the First and Second World Wars. On the square in front of the castle is an impressive plane tree, which probably dates from the 18th century. Thanks to the well-thought-out layout of the castle environment and of the park forest, the Sterrebos offers sufficient variety, both in terms of landscape and of course, to continue to fascinate.

Beautiful route from Kortrijk center to Kuurne along the north side of the Leie. In most parts there is a motorway next to the elevated cycle path, but you are therefore on an elevated and momentarily separated part. This ties in with the Leie Kuurne-Harelbeke and Bissegem-Kortrijk segments. Ideal for walking, touring cycling, running or cycling.

M108 Howitzer by the Leie

Highlight • Monument

This war memorial, a M108 Howitzer, commemorates the fallen soldiers who died during the Battle of the Leie. (24 - 26 May 1940, WW2). The first superstructure, M109 Howitzer, was donated in 1997 by the Sixth Artillery Regiment for the 30th anniversary of the connection with the city of Waregem. In 2008, during the celebration of V-Day, a complete M108 Howitzer was donated by the artillery department from Brasschaat. This confirmed the 40th anniversary of connection. During the construction of the new bridge over the Leie a few years ago, the artillery vehicle was temporarily moved. This armoured vehicle can be admired on the border of Ooigem and Desselgem, on the Desselgem side of the new Munken Bridge.
