Count's Castle

The Count's Castle reached its peak in the 12th and 13th centuries AD. It then housed the Cathars. After the support of the Cathars, the castle was besieged in the year 1209 by the armies of Simon de Montfort. After a siege of about two weeks, the Count's castle and the city of Carcassonne were forced to surrender to the Crusaders. Today, this magnificent castle dominates Carcassonne. Since the complete restoration of the castle in 1853, it has been recognized as one of the most impressive sites in the department of Aude. For a small fee you can access this beautiful architectural and historical monument.
