Petit Nice Passedat Beach at Anse de la Fausse Monnaie

Highlight • Beach

Popular swim and sunbathing spot on the rocks in front of the Passedat. A promenade runs along the upper end. Great overlook from the old bridge, where steps lead down the stairs to a small boat club and also on to the 'beach'.

The Tide Gauge

Highlight • Monument

The Marseille tide gauge was set up in 1883 at number 174 of the Corniche in Marseille, in Anse Calvo to determine an origin of the altitudes for mainland France. The measurements were carried out continuously from January 1, 1884 to December 31, 1896, over 13 years. On January 1, 1897, the arithmetic mean of all the measurements made during these thirteen years determined the mean sea level in this place. This average level was adopted as the French reference zero altitude. Tide gauge observations since 1884, apart from a few interruptions for maintenance, to date constitute one of the longest observation sequences in the world of sea level. Prophet Beach

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Prophet's Beach was originally intended to host a port sheltered by its 72-meter seawall, the construction of which was voted in 1894. A project that was to help fight against the accumulation of foul-smelling algae. But this port was a failure, the currents constantly sanding the cove. The last fishing huts will be razed in 1960 to widen the Corniche Kennedy. The Anse du Prophète is now home to one of the rare natural beaches in Marseille made up of real sand. As for its name, a famous baritone and an opera could be the explanation! One of the rumors on the name of the Prophet would come from a steamship which connected Marseille to Algiers in the 1850s. But for the daily La Marseillaise it is more likely that the handle takes its name from the lyric singer Jean-Vital Jammes who resided above the cove in Villa Ismaël (his stage name), located at the corner of Traverse Ismaël and Traverse des Bourguignons. His interpretation of the Prophet, Meyerbeer's opera must have inspired locals to name the site. The Prophet is a grand opera in five acts by Giacomo Meyerbeer on a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Émile Deschamps based on Voltaire's Essay on Morals and Spirit of Nations (1756). tourisme-marseille.com/fiche/plage-du-prophete-marseille

Vallon des Auffes

Highlight • Settlement

EN - A stone's throw from the Plage des Catalans, right opposite the statue to the heroes of the Eastern Army, nestles a small Provençal fishing village.

Wedged between two cliffs, resolutely facing the sea, the Vallon des Auffes offers the image of a time which would have stopped in the time of Marcel Pagnol. It is also one of the emblematic places of Marseille.
Unique, authentic, picturesque site, there is no shortage of adjectives for this little haven of peace both so close and so far from the hustle and bustle of the city center. This is where you will find one of the most beautiful settings for eating out in Marseille.

Deeply linked to the sea and fishing professions, even its name, the Vallon des Auffes comes from esparto (auffo in Provençal) which is a granulate used to make ropes. In the 19th century, rope manufacturers established themselves there. With its very colorful fishermen's huts and its pointus (typical Marseille fishing boats), and its restaurants as traditional as they are renowned, the Vallon des Auffes symbolizes the “Dolce Vita” of Marseille.
