Church of Saints John the Baptist and Roch, Germignaga

Highlight • Religious Site

Church of Santi Giovanni Battista e Rocco, Germignaga
A document from the 14th century assumes that Germignaga was hold in valtravagliaent. After the plague of 1523, a small square chapel was built in the center of the country at the behest of Giovanni Pietro Calderoni, dedicated to San Rocco and invoked against the plague. This building is later confirmed with the double title of San Rocco and San Sebastiano. In 1578 the expansion of the small church began, which was sponsored by Archbishop Karl Borromeo. The report of Archbishop Friedrich Borromeo's pastoral visit in 1596 shows that the work had not been completed for a major building. In 1644 the foundations of the bell tower were laid and in 1685 it was decided to enlarge the church, but this project was not completed as the work stopped after not a major construction. At the beginning of the 18th century he decided to completely reorganize and the project was entrusted to Carlo Federico Pietrasanta. The present church was built from 1707; was finally completed in 1740. During his pastoral visit in 1827, the Archbishop of Milan, Carlo Gaetano von Gaisruck, encouraged the population to expand the choir. H. 1832, was practical. In 1835 the parish was moved from the old church of St. John the Baptist to the hill. Between 1836, the year he joined the rectory of Luino, and 1844, the building was modified to a design by Natale Pugnetti. In 1895, as noted by Archbishop Ferrari, there were 2,500 believers. Eventually, between 1994 and 1995, the parish was restored.
