Porta Sant'Anna (St. Anna's Gate)

Highlight • Monument

Porta Sant'Anna, officially known as Porta Vittorio Emanuele, is one of the gates in the walls of Lucca – popularly known by locals as the "hole" of Sant'Anna, after the fault of the same name.

The gate was opened in 1910 to serve the essential motorized traffic in the essential part of the city, which caused the Baluardo (bulwark) San Donato, erected in the 17th century for defensive purposes, to no longer be fit for the task. It was therefore decided that the new entrance would have two arches, in line with the enlarged via Vittorio Emanuele, which would replace the Via di San Paolino as the main essential artery.

In order not to spoil the view of San Donato, a favour was wisely granted to two fairly simple carriageways (instead of a superstructure) flanked by two pedestrian passages under the bull that separates the shoe from the parapet of the wall, thus keeping the continuity intact. In the middle of the gate, between the two central doorways, the marble coat of arms of the city can be seen. The arches that divide the compartment, made in the thickness of the walls, are made of exposed brick.

Lucca City Walls

Highlight • Monument

Lucca's city wall has enclosed the old city center since 180 BC. The current wall, built between 1504 and 1645, served as a defense against attacks from nearby Florence. The only use of the wall as a defense line was against the waters of the River Serchio on November 18, 1812. As one of the best-preserved examples of a 16th-century European fortification, the wall remains an impressive symbol of Lucca's rich history.

Lucca City Walls

Highlight • Monument

Built between the 1500s and 1600s, the walls of Lucca are, after those of Nicosia, the second largest example in Europe of walls built according to the principles of "modern style" fortification that have been completely preserved in a large city.

Villa Bottini (Lucca)

Highlight • Historical Site

This beautiful urban villa in Lucca (built in the second half of the XVI century by Paolo Buonvisi) takes its name from a noble local family who lived there until the early 1900s.
It has the shape of a parallelepiped surmounted by a lookout lodge. It is located in the center of an elegant garden enclosed by a adorned with Renaissance windows and three portals (the main access portal is located on Via Elisa).
Inside the building, on the ground floor, you can admire the evocative decoration of a cycle of frescoes with mythological and allegorical scenes made by Ventura Salimbeni at the end of the sixteenth century.
It is currently used by the municipality of Lucca, as the seat of the Culture Office.

San Martino Cathedral, Lucca

Highlight • Religious Site

In the left transept of the cathedral, which is well worth seeing, is the famous tomb of Ilaria del Caretto, who died in childbed in 1405 at the age of 19 as the wife of a nobleman from Lucca. The portrait is made of the finest Carrara marble and is unusually realistic. Her female body is clearly visible under the robe, while she just seems to be asleep. A small dog watches over her feet, a sign of marital fidelity.
The wooden relic Volto Santo in the cathedral is also very famous.

Fountain for the Kidneys

Highlight • Rest Area

Along the road that goes up from San Giusto to Sant'Andrea di Compito, you come across this cool fountain with an abundant jet, excellent for filling up before climbing Monte Serra. The water comes from the San Pierino Fountain, a hundred meters above the road, which is less easy to reach.
