Built in the second decade of the twentieth century for military purposes, this fort is as decadent as it is fascinating. Easily accessible from Serrada or San Sebastiano, it certainly deserves a stop.

Forte Cherle

Highlight • Historical Site

It was built between 1910 and 1913 on the hill of the same name, at 1445 m above sea level.

To avoid confusing it with the Busa Verle fort, the Austrians called it Werk Sebastiano, taking its name from the village located on the opposite side of the valley.

It had four 10cm howitzers in armored domes, two 10cm howitzers in casemates and 18 machine gun positions.

Together with the Belvedere Gschwent fort, it controlled the upper stretch of the Val d'Astico and blocked access to the Florentine area.

It suffered heavy bombing but was not the subject of direct attacks.

In 1936 the roof was reduced by the recoverers to a mass of ruins. Some internal passages can be visited.

On the roof, a suggestive panoramic point allows a broad view of Lavarone and Luserna, up to and beyond Cima Vézzena.

Departing between Carbonare and San Sebastiano it is better to stay on the state road and avoid a couple of sections that are too steep for muscle bikes

Great ride starting from Gionghi town hall square. You descend immediately and quickly arrive at Lake Lavarone and from there you go towards Fort Cherle on a beautiful forest road always uphill, beyond the road, you pass in front of the "emperor's staircase" then a long transfer until you cross the francolini provincial road in the direction of "strong dosso …
