Rastede Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle was formerly the residence of the Counts and Grand Dukes of the House of Oldenburg. Even today, the castle is still family-owned and therefore not open to the public. However, you can enjoy the English-style parkland surrounding the castle.

Grand Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg had a park built here in Rastede next to his summer residence.
His son and successor, Paul Friedrich August, expanded the complex in the style of an English landscape park. As part of this, the local lowland, covered with alder trees (known in Low German as "Ellern"), was transformed into a fishpond in 1842.

The complexity of this undertaking is particularly evident in the fact that the pond was not completed until six years later, in 1848. Its completion created a new view from the palace over the Ellern and Mühlenteich ponds to the watermill.

Over 100 years later, at the end of the 1950s, the Ellernteich was in such poor condition that it was decided to fish it out and drain it. Furthermore, new Ellern trees were planted to restore its original state.

Rastede Castle Park

Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig acquired the former monastery property in 1777, had the palace built in the classical style as a country house and commissioned the garden architect C.F. Bosse, son of the court gardener in Wolfenbüttel, with the creation of an English garden.

Peter Friedrich Ludwig, born in Eutin in 1755, started after an 8-year educational trip, during which he studied art and philosophy of antiquity, on a journey through Europe with 91 stops, including to Wörlitz and England, where he explored the first landscape gardens. As early as 1778 he made designs for the 10-hectare park and the park furnishings, including the Temple of Venus, which was built as a tea house in 1783. The castle served as the summer residence of the Oldenburg dukes and grand dukes. Successor Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August expanded the park around 1843 to include Ellernteich and Hirschpark. Today the palace garden is 330 hectares in size.

Ellernteich Pond, Rastede

Highlight • Lake

The Ellernteich is a real curiosity -
because this pond was created twice.

The Oldenburg Grand Duke Peter Friedrich
Ludwig had a park built here in Rastede next to his summer residence.

His son and successor Paul Friedrich August expanded the complex in the style of an English landscape park. As a result,
the local lowland, which was covered with alders, known in Low German as Ellern, was converted into a fish pond in 1842.

How complex the undertaking was can be seen in particular from the fact that the construction of the pond could only be completed 6 years later, in 1848. With its completion, a new line of sight was created from the castle over the Ellern and mill ponds to the water mill.

Loyer Kirchweg

Highlight • Trail

On the Loyer Kirchweg you drive on well-developed paths from Rastede to Loy and in the opposite direction. The Kirchweg in particular and the castle park and the forest are worth a trip at any time of the year.
