Eschenheimer Tower

The first tower at this point was built in 1343 with the third and last city wall and replaced by the current one in 1400. For 400 years it was one of five entrances to the city. Access was via an artificially created moat, which, among other things, was fed by the Main, through a gate in this tower.

Stones and earth were stored on the first floor above the gate to block access in the event of a defense, the tower guard lived on the floor above. This floor was inhabited until 1956.

When the city wall was torn down / razed in 1806-12, the tower should also believe in it, but then remained as a memorial with three others from the former 60. Today it is the oldest structure in Frankfurt city center that has been preserved in its original state.
