Spanjaardsgat

Highlight • Historical Site

The Spanjaardsgat consists of two defense towers, built by Count Hendrik III. The left tower is called 'Granaattoren'. Because carrier pigeons were kept in the right tower for William of Orange, it was given the name 'Duiventoren'. The towers now serve as chapels and the Duiventoren also houses the information center of the Dutch Defense Academy, of which the KMA is a part.

Many people think that this is where the ruse with the peat ship took place in 1590, but that happened a little further, at the current sports field of the KMA. Peat skipper Adriaan van Bergen then recaptured the Castle from the Spaniards by smuggling soldiers of Prince Maurits into the castle walls in his ship.

Grote Markt, Breda

Highlight • Settlement

The Grote Markt is the heart of the city of Breda where, as soon as the sun comes out, the terraces fill up. You can sit down for a drink under the shady plane trees or choose from one of the many restaurants for a delicious lunch or dinner.

The Grote Markt then and now
The Grote Markt, the highest point in the city, has been used as a marketplace for centuries. In the beginning, mainly grains were traded. The general commodity markets, as they are now held on Tuesday mornings and Fridays, date back to 1321. The city carillonneur has been playing the carillon of the Great Tower during market days since the seventeenth century.

The Grote Markt was also the place where executions took place. The clock in the turret of the Town Hall called on curious Breda residents to experience the gruesome spectacle. Nowadays it is happy and above all cozy.

Breda Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Breda's town hall actually consists of four houses that architect Philips Willem Schonck hid behind one facade in 1767. The oldest part is the large hall. As early as the fifteenth century, a so-called 'Cleyn raedthuys' was also put into use. The rightmost house, the 'Lying Hert' was added last.

The main entrance to the town hall above the steps is guarded by two sandstone lions. Lady Justice above the main entrance indicates that justice was also administered here in the past.

A large copy of Velazquez's famous painting 'Las Lanzas' hangs in the hall. It shows the surrender of Breda to the Spanish commander Spinola (1625). The original painting hangs in the Prado in Madrid.

The town hall is only used for council and committee meetings, official receptions and weddings.

Historic site Tower of the old city wall

Highlight • Historical Site

From 1332 to 1538, a tower of the city wall stood at this location.

The Breda Archaeological Society has made this location visual again by rebuilding the foundation in brick. Take a seat and go back in time.

Historical interpretation: Breda was surrounded by a city wall until around 1536, partly on an earthen rampart, with a moat around it. This moat connected to the Mark on the west side of the city. On the north side of the city, the medieval city wall ran straight through the current Valkenberg park until the 1630s. Of course, there was no park at that time. Outside the city moat were meadows and it was also a wet area, at least in the area that is now occupied by the current park.
After a tree was felled in 1976, the foundation of a wall tower was exposed for the first time. In 1986, this tower was rebuilt on its old foundations. This tower was built up to about 1 meter above the ground and now forms a central point in the park. But this is not the only built-up tower. A tower is also visible closer to the castle moat. This was excavated in 1994 and also built up to the ground. The city wall must have run between the towers. But this wall was not found during archaeological research. That could only mean one thing. The city wall originally lay on an older earthen wall and was completely demolished after 1536. Because the foundation of the city wall was in the wall, it had also disappeared in its entirety. The wall towers were founded much deeper and were found again.

Walloon Church

Highlight • Religious Site

To the left of the entrance to the Beguinage is the Walloon Church. This intimate church was built as a Wendelinus Chapel on behalf of Johanna van Polanen. After the Beguinage moved, the Wendelinus Chapel became the church for the Beguines. Later the church was transferred to the Walloon community. The officers and cadets had their own benches here. The father of the poet Jacques Perk was a Walloon pastor here from 1868 to 1872. Today the church is used for exhibitions, concerts and receptions.
