Drieboomkensberg Pilgrimage Site

Highlight (Segment) • Religious Site

This place of pilgrimage is dedicated to Our Lady of Fever. The resort is located on the highest peak of a group of inland dunes. In 1746 the 'Convoy Battle' took place in Drieboomkensberg during the 'Succession War'. An English officer was seriously injured and he promised to erect a chapel if he survived the battle alive. His prayers were answered and around 1750 he had a chapel built here. However, this chapel was destroyed in 1800 by a terrible storm. The chapel was never rebuilt. A statue of Mary was hung from one of the three larchs on the hill. This statue can still be found in Drieboomkensberg. In the area you will find the beautiful Kempen forests and the ancient Zandven. The ideal environment to relax,

Sanatorium Lizzie Marsily

Highlight • Historical Site

1913
De Dennen has a rich history. It all began in 1913, with the founding of the limited company "Sanatorium der Provincie Antwerpen" by Albert Kreglinger. He purchased a 9-hectare site in Westmalle and had the building plans drawn up by architect Michel de Braey.

1919
Work began just before the outbreak of the First World War. The site was eventually halted by an enemy invasion and was later completely looted. Work resumed in 1919. By then, the site had grown to 140 hectares.

1920 - 1921
In 1920, the buildings—three pavilions, a refectory, a kitchen, a meeting room, and a chapel—were officially inaugurated by Queen Elisabeth. In 1921, the king and queen donated a laundry to the sanatorium. Incidentally, the sanatorium is named after the Antwerp chief secretary of the National Association for Tuberculosis Control, Lizzie Marsily.
