St. Peter's Church Kortessem

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Pieterskerk is the parish church of Kortessem and is located at Kerkplein No. 1.
Story
A church was first mentioned in the 11th century. A Romanesque nave was built between 1026 and 1038. The Romanesque west tower dates from the second half of the 12th century. An early Gothic choir and transept were added in 1270-1272.
In 1225 the church became a collegiate church.
The church has suffered a lot of violence. In 1468 it was sacked by the troops of Charles the Bold. In 1490 it was set on fire by the gangs of Jehannot-le-Bâtard. William of Orange's troops also caused destruction in 1568. Looting also occurred later, including by French troops.
The restoration took place in 1870-1875 under the direction of Herman Jaminé, during which the side aisles were enlarged in the neo-Romanesque style using old materials.

Historic Square Farmstead from 1641

Highlight • Historical Site

Also known as Weyer Castle. This manor house was originally a fief of the County of Loon, mentioned as early as the 13th century. It remained the property of the Weyer family until 1603. In 1641, when the small castle was owned by Jean-Baptist de Graty, it was rebuilt.

It was actually an L-shaped manor house surrounded by a moat. The northwest wing (the gatehouse) and the southwest wing are remnants of this. In the second half of the 19th century, two wings were added, and it became a square farmstead.

Remnants of the moat are still present. The complex still has 17th-century wall anchors, and above the gate is a facade stone with a coat of arms, the inscription "grata sideragnati", and the year 1641.

The artist Frits Jeuris called the concrete statue #inconcreto.
“Our thoughts are abstract, but through visualization – first in our heads, then in physical form – they become concrete.”
You can climb the work of art from behind and sit at the top to view the landscape. (2021)

Hardelingen Castle

Highlight • Castle

Since 1798, a 19th and 20th century country house has grown out of a farm and preserves an old core in an approximately 40 ha estate with a park in landscape style from the last quarter of the 19th century, a forest park characterized by the very uneven relief and an old tree population with some champion trees.
