Seaford Head Viewpoint

Highlight • Trail

The Coastguard Cottages on the cliff have been built in the 1920's, shortly after the National Coastguard Service was founded. They were put here because Cuckmere Haven was an important place for smuggling. Since they were built the cliff has retreated more then 30 meters, putting the cottages in danger.

Hope Gap is a place that is rich in beauty and geology. The distinctive white cliffs have layers of chalk interspersed with a layer of flint. The beach is also a magnificent fossil-hunting spot. From Hope Gap, you get a stunning coastal view which extends over the Seven Sisters cliffs.

View of the Seven Sisters Cliffs

Highlight • Viewpoint

These chalk cliffs are one of Britain's prettiest unspoilt coastlines, and are situated in the Seven Sisters County Park. From this point, it is a beautiful view of the Seven Sisters, especially during clear weather.

The Severn Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs on the southern coast of Britain.

Seaford Head is one of the best viewpoints of this classic bit of coast. It's also an important nature reserve with a wide variety of plants, birds and insects.

Do take care as there has been significant rock fall from the cliffs here recently (2024), look out for warning signs and stay away from the edges.

Seven Sisters Cliffs

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

As the Seven Sisters, the cliff coast, which is located between Eastbourne and Seaford, is called. They are the most impressive cliffs of the South Downs in Sussex in the south of England. The Seven Sisters is a chain of consecutive chalk cliffs of the coastline. Since there are eight peaks and seven valleys, it is debatable whether the name refers to the crests or the valleys. According to an exhibition in the visitor center of the National Trust at Birling Gap, the name Seven Sisters was created around 1600. Only then has the continuous erosion formed another cliff, the eighth sister. The historical name has been preserved.

From west to east, beginning to the east of Cuckmere Haven, they bear the following names, with the valleys in between also bearing individual designations. In the list, the cliffs are highlighted in bold:

Haven Brow
Short Bottom

Limekiln Bottom
Rough Brow

Brass point
Gap Bottom
Flagstaff Point (passing in the Flagstaff Brow)
Flagstaff Bottom
Flat Hill

Baily's Hill
Michel Dean
Went Hill Brow
East of the last rock is the village of Birling Gap, which is severely threatened by erosion. Here you can access the beach via a staircase. Behind it there is the already dismantled lighthouse Belle Tout and then the highest chalk cliffs in the UK, the Beachy Head, below which stands a lighthouse.

The hiking trail meanders with gentle inclines over the chalk cliffs, a great experience with wonderful views. You always have a great view of the “peaks” of the Seven Sisters.

The path leads beautifully along the chalk cliffs through the hills, a unique experience. There are always spectacular views of the cliffs of the Seven Sisters and the sea, but be careful, the area is not secured.
