Haw Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The last place to cross the Severn before Gloucester. Haw Bridge is built on the site of an ancient ferry, which existed long before the weirs constructed at Gloucester. When the river was at its original level and during periods of low water the river was fordable and the crossing was known as Haw Passage. There is a pub at the side of the bridge.

Odda's Chapel and Abbot's Court

Odda of Deerhurst founded the chantry in 1056 for his brother Ælfric, who died in 1053. The timber-framed house, Abbot's Court was added in the early 17th century.

Odda's Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Odda's Chapel is one of the most complete surviving Saxon churches in England. The Grade I-listed chapel was built in 1056 for Earl Odda, a relation of Edward the Confessor. Astonishingly, it was incorporated into a farmhouse during the 17th century, with a kitchen in the nave and a bedroom in the chancel. Fortunately, it was rediscovered in 1865. The chapel is now in the care of English Heritage. It is free to visit.

Priory Church of St Mary, Deerhurst

Highlight • Historical Site

There was a Benedictine monastery and manor at Deerhurst by 804. Around 1060 King Edward the Confessor divided the manor, giving the monastery one hide (approx 120 acres / 49 hectares) of land to the Abbey of St Denis in France, making it an alien priory.

Tewkesbury Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Tewkesbury Abbey is a magnificent place of worship in the heart of town. The Grade I-listed building was originally founded as Benedictine Abbey in 1087. After the dissolution of the monasteries, it became the parish church. You can observe wonderful Norman architecture at the abbey and admire stained glass windows that have survived from the 15th century. The abbey grounds are a pleasant place to relax, too.
