East Devon Pebblebed Heaths

Highlight • Natural

The Pebblebed Heaths are a series of nine areas in East Devon that share the same incredibly important habitat, and are managed by Clinton Devon Estates and the RSPB.

These include Woodbury Common, Bicton Common, East Budleigh Common, Colaton Raleigh Common, Hawkerland, Mutters Moor, Aylesbeare Common, Harpford Common and Dalditch Common.

These areas of wilderness are brilliant playgrounds for hikers, horse riders and bikers alike, and a real treat for anyone who enjoys wildlife. As of May 2021, they have now been given extra protection as a designated National Nature Reserve.

To find out more about their history and what wildlife to find there, check out: pebblebedheaths.org.uk/your-visit/#interactiveMap

Bridleway to Woodbury Castle

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A great alternative to the steeper top of Castle Lane, along a rutted and often wet wide bridleway before a sharper climb up to the car park opposite Woodbury Castle.

From the top, make sure you look out over the estuary for some incredible views (weather permitting)!

It's almost as if Woodbury Common was made for gravel riders and mountain bikers. Besides being the training ground for the nearby Royal Marines, the Common features a network of expansive fire roads, twisting singletracks, wooded trails and even some man-made jumps. Truly something for everyone here.

Woodbury Castle, or rather the moat that remains, is a great place to start if you've made your way here by car or bike. You could spend hours or even days exploring the commonland here, in fact I've spent years here and still get a bit lost and find new parts every now and then!

Hemyock Castle

Highlight • Castle

Hemyock Castle is a privately owned scheduled Ancient Monument & residential site, normally only opened to the public during special open days on Bank Holiday Mondays (2 to 5 pm) between Easter and September. On open days, visitors can view the substantial remains of Hemyock Castle's towers, walls, moat, grounds; and visit its display areas.

The remains of a moated, rare late 14th century castle surround a much older manor house. During the 17th century English Civil War, the castle was garrisoned for Parliament. The Royalists attacked twice, eventually besieging and capturing Hemyock Castle. Afterwards, the castle was slighted (destroyed). Subsequently the site evolved to become a farm, and later a private home. Former outbuildings have also been converted into homes
