This has to be just one of the most idyllic villages you could live in : a huge green, traditional pubs and a lovely church.

There are at least 4 different ways to reach Box Hilltop, but this is the most scenic. Don't forget to look back to admire the zig zag road.

Very steep in places - quite a challenge on a gravel bike. Note that it gets VERY boggy here, so only really an option after a dry spell. All bridleway.

Nice to explore for a while on foot, or since most of the paths are bridleways you could ride much of it too with a mountain bike or gravel bike. I was having a minor gear failure so mostly stuck to the walking option. Bridleways are largely chalk: there is quite a bit of flint mixed in too, so could be quite hard on tyres. The open grass areas do not have rights-of-way over them and there are signs warning cyclists and horse riders not to ride over them. See surreywildlifetrust.org/nature-reserves/sheepleas

Shere Village

Highlight • Settlement

A quintessential English village, Shere was made famous as a filming location for the Holiday, the Christmas movie starring Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Cameron Diaz. The Tillingbourne runs through the village and is a popular place for paddling in the summer. There is an ice cream shop and the Dabbling Duck cafe is very popular with cyclists.

Forest Green Village Green

Highlight • Natural

Below Leith Hill sits the hamlet of Forest Green. The dwellings are few in number, but spread out around the large central green. There is a 15th century house, Tillies Cottage, the Parrot Inn, which is at least 400 years old and the Forest Green Forge, a 16th century building which is one of the only working forges on a village green still in operation.
