Description
If you're looking for a truly rewarding mountain biking experience in the Lakes Basin, the Mills Peak Lookout – Mills Peak Trail loop from C-Road delivers. This moderate 17.0-mile (27.3 km) route packs in 2913 feet (888 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 3 hours and 2 minutes to complete, making it a fantastic option for intermediate riders seeking both challenge and incredible views.
What to expect on Mills Peak Lookout – Mills Peak Trail loop from C-Road
This loop takes you on a diverse journey, starting with a climb that leads to the Mills Peak Fire Lookout at 7,300 feet. From there, you'll be treated to panoramic views of Gold Lake, Packard Saddle, and Sierra Valley. The descent is where the real fun begins, with the upper section offering rocky, technical singletrack and loose shale, demanding attention from intermediate riders. As you move through the middle and lower sections, the trail transitions into flowy bermed corners mixed with challenging rock gardens and small, rollable drops, all while weaving through old trees and offering glimpses of the Gold Lakes Basin.
Planning your visit
While the Mills Peak Trail is often ridden as a shuttle descent, this loop offers the full experience, including the significant climb to the lookout. The trail is optimized for wheeled traffic in both both directions. Be prepared for a sustained effort on the ascent. Parking is available at the C-Road trailhead. The best time to visit is generally when the snow has melted and before the peak heat of summer, allowing for comfortable riding conditions.
