Forte Föens

Highlight • Historical Site

Built towards the end of the nineteenth century at the behest of the then Italian Ministry of War, Fort Föens was one of the fortifications for defensive purposes in these areas. It rises between the Costans and Ferane canals, at the foot of Mount Jafferau. Currently the main building is in fair conditions of conservation and the aiming angles of the cannons are clearly visible on the terraces and on the roof of the fort.

Fort Jafferau

Highlight • Historical Site

The Monte Jafferau is a 2805 m s.l.m. high mountain in the Cottian Alps in Italy in the border area with France. It rises east of the city of Bardonecchia on the left side of the Dora di Bardonecchia and separates the area of Bardonecchia from Valfredda. The north summit is called Testa del Ban (2652 m, world icon) and has a peak height of around 30 meters.

At the top is Fort Jafferau, built at the end of the 19th century, an important fortress, part of the Vallo Alpino and one of the highest fortifications in the Cottian Alps. A road leads from Salbertrand to the fort on the summit.

Monte Jafferau is a popular destination for enduro riders. Approaches exist u. a. from Salbertrand and Savoulx. The slopes of Monte Jafferau are part of the Bardonecchia ski area.
