View of Barranco del Jurado

Highlight • Gorge

The way to the smugglers' bay from Tijarafe requires sure-footedness and a head for heights at all times. An impressive path with great views of the Atlantic. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to swim in the sea, as it is almost never possible to jump into the sea in winter.

As you descend to the Pirate Bay, you sometimes wonder why you walk this route and do not just drive down the road. Granted, this is not the most trustworthy road I've ever seen, but at least it can be done with a normal, halfway PS-strong car. Partly the roads are also secured with crash barriers. Does not run optimally with hiking boots. But: Shortly before the parking lot in front of the pirate bay comes again a Mirador, which offers a beautiful view.

There is a water point right by the parking lot. A faucet with a stiff push button provides refreshment. It is not specified whether you can drink the water.
Important information from the pirate bay as well as from the beach is about 150hm to the water point

Porís de Candelaria

Highlight • Settlement

PR LP 12.2 and partly GR LP 130: Cervecería Isla Verde - Tijarafe - Porís de Candelaría (or Proís, both correct, "natural harbor" in old Spanish) - Barranco del Jurado - Cevecería.
Circular route in the northwest of La Palma.
Approx. 4.5 - 6 hours with breaks. No shadow. Good beer in the end. : D
Way there (downhill) to Porís de Candelaria approx. 2.5 - 3 hours.
Approx. 12-14 km, approx. 850-1000 meters of altitude uphill and downhill, accumulated.
Max. Height approx. 600, min. 0 m above sea level. Up to 38% incline / decline with loose ground. Bathing possibilities depending on the sea and current in the former pirate and smuggler port Porís de Candelaria and Playa del Jurado via bathing ladders.
As always on Isla Bonita, it is well signposted.
The vertical meters are not to be underestimated. Not recommended in summer heat, see also senderosdelapalma.com.
During our hike there was some strange light, light gray, thin clouds and strange contrast, so the photos are not optimal. Optimal hiking temperature of around 20 ° C for this. :)

Small Fishing Village

Super cute fishing village
Definitely bring your swimsuit
But PLEASE! The huts are inhabited. If you want to stay here, respect the residents, don't make noise, don't leave trash, and simply enjoy nature and the water!

Porís de Candelaria

Highlight • Settlement

The massive rocky outcrop with its weekend cottages is unique. These even have electricity. The residents are friendly and happy to invite you for a glass of wine. Since we still had a steep climb ahead of us, we decided against it.

Absolutely fantastic tour, the descent was more than worth it, but the 4-5 km uphill climb is really tough on the legs. But the pride afterwards is all the greater!

Unfortunately, the original path over the gorge is currently closed for an uncertain period of time. That's why we chose the descent via the street (advantage: you don't have to look for a parking space at the bottom!). There are some beautiful views of the gorge and the approaching sea! The small side path (almost at the bottom, leaving the …

Certainly not entirely effortless... The car was parked on the roadside and then we continued on foot. The descent on mostly asphalted paths, quite steep (partly up to 30%), lined with incredibly beautiful views of the rugged coast. The highlight is of course the destination, the smuggler's cave. If the red flag is not flying, you could also swim there …

Despite the bad weather forecast, we decided to take a short circular route from Tijarafe to the Poris de Candelaria. From a small parking lot next to the road, we first went steeply down the serpentine road to the sea. We had looked at the Poris itself last year, so we went up the steep path on the other side …

When the weather is nice and there is little wind, an impressive hike down to the pirate bay on mostly asphalt paths. From there down then quite exhausting 650 hm again steeply uphill. A worthwhile hike totaling 4 hours with breaks.

Showing Translation

If you are not sure-footed and have a head for heights, you should walk back along the road. The hiking trail markings lead you differently than Komoot. The section is very steep on the south slope.
