Dender Riverside Cycle Path in Pamel

Highlight • Cycleway

Here you are on the Brabant bank of the Dender in Pamel, a sub-municipality of Roosdaal. Cycling along the Dender is wonderful, but this sometimes busy road is actually too narrow to fully enjoy.

The statue on the Dender is the Statue of the Fat Van Pamel, a monument in Pamel (Roosdaal) in memory of the popular figure Victor De Klerck, alias 'the Fat van Pamel' (1848-1885). This bronze work of art is located on the edge of the Dender and is by sculptor Patrick van Craenenbroeck. The statue only shows the clothing of the imposing figure, as a symbol of his liberation from his merciless fate. It weighed an estimated 300 kilos and was often watched by the boat pullers who pulled their ships along the towpath1. It made him shy and depressed and he was barely thirty-six years old. The statue was inaugurated on September 9, 2001 and is now a beacon along the Denderkaai. You can also find a playground and a bench there.

Old Quay Bridge, Ninove

Highlight • Bridge

The Oude Kaaibrug in Ninove was originally painted pink. Not everyone thought the color was successful, so the council of aldermen of Ninove decided to give the bridge a new color that fits better into the landscape. The bridge is now painted in dove gray (RAL 5014).

Koepoort

Highlight • Monument

The Koepoort, sole survivor of the four city gates.
Ninove, which acquired city rights in the 14th century, was defended by the castle, a tower and an earthen wall, interrupted by four city gates. The gates provided access to the city via the four main approach roads: the Brabantse Poort on the road from Brussels, the Geraardsbergse Poort on the road from the city of the same name and the Kloosterpoort on the road from Aalst. The Koepoort gave access to the Nederwijk (hence also "Nederwijkpoort"), the Kouter and the Dendermeersen.

All the gates in peacetime served as homes for the poor, storage place for powder and weaponry, prison.

At the end of the 18th century, three of the four Ninove city gates had been demolished. You can now find evocations where they stood: a fountain with two turrets (Brabantse Poort), a work of art (Geraardsbergse Poort) and two memorial stones (Kloosterpoort).

The fact that the Koepoort survived the demolition is probably due to the fact that it was the least in the way of the city that was systematically expanding.

The Koepoort, which is mentioned for the first time in 1397, under the name "Warmoespoort" was completely rebuilt about 1600. It was built in sandstone from the Geraardsbergen quarries and after her restoration it officially served as a city prison. Since it, unlike the other gates, had no drawbridge, an earthen bulwark was built around it in wartime...

After the city prison, the Koepoort became the residence of the municipal volunteer fire brigade and the library. After that it was used as a hall for socio-cultural organizations. However, the ravages of time gnawed mercilessly and the building had to undergo a complete and thorough interior and exterior restoration.

The Koepoort was festively reopened on 11 March 2012. Now the hall is available again for small concerts, lectures...
