Südermarkt Flensburg

Highlight • Settlement

Some of the oldest buildings in Flensburg that are still standing are located here. The weekly market has been held in the middle of it all twice a week for over 800 years. People meet here to chat and buy fresh local products or to visit Flensburg's largest inner-city arcade.

The church was built in two stages. In place of today's sanctuary stood in 1332 a smaller church. The building grew after 1390, starting from West, first on the forecourt. After completion of the four western yokes, they were established and consecrated as a church.
Then they tore off the old church and continued the construction from 1440 to the east. First without a tower, it was completed in 1480, damaged in the city fire of 1485 and rebuilt until 1490.
In 1497, Peter Hansen cast the bronze baptismal font in Rote Straße. There were 422 inhabited plots of which 143 in St. Nicholas. Already in 1526 Gerhard Slewardt gave the first Lutheran sermon in Flensburg here.
According to the Reformation understanding of a church in 1570, the lawyer Blasius Eckenberger donated the pulpit carved by the Lübeck-based Hinrich Matthes, which received a staircase around 1600 probably built by Heinrich Ringeringk.
In 1897 the Schalldeckel was added, a work of the museum's founder Heinrich Sauermann. Now the tower helmet was built in neo-gothic style after plans of the architect Johannes Otzen from Berlin. The tower is now about 90 meters high.
In 1909 he received at 60 meters height, a glockenspiel, the 17 bells ring every day at 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 clock. St. Nikolai is the largest church in the city with dimensions of 52 x 21 m, a ridge height of 40 m and a 90 m high tower.

In 1898 the "Kattsund" houses south and east of the church and two houses north of the then smaller Südermarkt were demolished. From the construction situation at that time, one can get an approximate picture of the walk around the church. If one goes up from the entrance of the church to the Nikolaikirchhof, one passes the organist's house built on the tower, on the opposite side of the tower the building of the former To reach St. Nikolai operated school.

The Nordermarkt is the medieval center of Flensburg and the oldest market square in the city. It was built in the middle of the 12th century under the Danish King Waldemar I, when a new settlement was built here. In the middle of the square stands the Neptune fountain from 1785.

Flensburg Harbor Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Flensburger Hafen (Flensburg Harbour) is located at the end of the Flensburger Förde within the city of Flensburg. A distinction is made between the west side, the east side, and the tip of the harbour.

The harbour extends in the west from the tip of the harbour to the Baltic Sea resort. On the east bank, its dimensions were formerly counted up to Kielseng. Since the withdrawal of the Bundeswehr, Sonwik and the adjacent boat harbour of the Mürwik Naval School are sometimes also mentioned in this context. In addition, the buildings of the Flensburg city centre, the buildings of Jürgensby, and the Volkspark are located around the harbour, forming Flensburg's distinctive skyline. Next to the Flensburger Hafen, there is a sailing harbour at Fahrensodde on the east bank, which does not belong to the aforementioned harbour.

At the tip of the harbour, Flensburg's Mühlenstrom flows into the Förde. On Angelburger Straße, where the tip of the harbour was located in the Middle Ages before the Förde silted up, became muddy and was filled in, the Royal Water Mill stood until the beginning of the 20th century.
The current tip of the harbour is protected from surrounding traffic noise by the embankments of the harbour railway. Until the 1980s, the so-called Kanalschuppen (canal shed) stood there. Today, the tip of the harbour is undeveloped and consists of a large open space that serves as a venue for various events. In summer, when the area is unoccupied, young people often play frisbee or Viking chess there.

Beautiful harbor and great alleys, but also some of the paths and houses are already quite worn out.

A bit along the Flensburg Fjord and through the shopping area. Flensburg certainly has a lot more to offer: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flensburg

I went there with high expectations but was terribly disappointed. Parts of the city aren't very attractive, as they're too dirty and plastered with stupid stickers! The cleanliness also leaves a lot to be desired. I took a quick look at the statistics from the last BW and probably found the reason!

Then it should be again, a challenge from March to the 🌊 Sea. But before it comes to rest and recovery, the physical condition is once again very good, 2x MtM, this time Flensburg instead of Föhr. Before the cross-border commuter, there was 1x city tour including the pedestrian zone, 1x check-in at the harbor tip and 1x visit to …

First, head to the castle early, then visit the dotted city🔴⚫️🟤. A city, after all...
At 64 m above sea level, you can or must manage a few climbs and descents on your city tour, unless you stay on the main shopping street😉.

When it comes to Flensburg, you shouldn't think about your points account, because it's a beautiful city.

A video will follow later, which I will then link again.
