Description
If you're looking for diverse mountain biking trails with a side of history, the Mountainbike loop from Cerrillos is definitely worth your time. This moderate 39.3-mile (63.2 km) route, with 1672 feet (510 metres) of climbing over roughly 3 hours and 38 minutes, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. It's an excellent choice for intermediate riders seeking varied terrain and expansive views, especially when higher-altitude options are out of commission.
What to expect on Mountainbike loop from Cerrillos
The route takes you through Cerrillos Hills State Park, where you'll encounter a mix of mostly smooth doubletrack and some challenging singletrack sections. Expect rocky areas, ledges, and small rock gardens, particularly on the fun descent towards and through Elkins Canyon, which features technical elements and bedrock pavement. The hills are generally small but can be quite steep, providing a good workout. As you ride, you'll enjoy long, expansive views of the Sandia, Ortiz, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo mountains, alongside historical elements like old gold and turquoise mine shafts, complete with interpretive signs.
Planning your visit
Cerrillos Hills State Park is a year-round day-use destination, making it a reliable option even when trails around Santa Fe are snow-covered. The park's lower elevation is a big plus for off-season riding. Be aware that the trails are multi-use, shared with hikers and equestrians, so courtesy is key. There's a range of difficulty levels within the park, from green to black diamond, so you can tailor your ride to your skill level.
