Danube Cyclist Rest Stop

Highlight • Restaurant

Cyclists from all over the world meet at the Donau Radler petrol station. What began with five beer table sets and a snack car has now become a sizeable place with huts and around 100 seats directly on the Danube bridge. In the summer at over 30 degrees it seems almost like a little paradise, if you get a cool apple spritzer here. But even on cooler, rainy days, the Radler petrol station, which is open from April to October, is the right address. Then you get a warm soup or a hot coffee.

Tip: Here you will find repair tools, tools, bicycle hoses, air and electricity for e-bikes. And in an emergency, operators Liane and Herbert Schwegler have a tip where to find the nearest bike shop in the area.

After a 78-kilometer journey from the Ostallgäu region near Obergünzburg, the Mindel flows into the Danube here from the right. The Mindel valley has been intensively using water power since the Middle Ages. Today, electrical energy is generated in thirty hydropower plants in the Günzburg district alone.

Very nice varied path through the alluvial forests and on the Danube 😎

The second stage begins, but before that, I stop at a bakery in Offingen, as the Gasthaus zur Krone doesn't serve breakfast. The bakery is really busy! Afterward, I grab a snack. Now the hike can begin. It turns out to be a truly beautiful trail; sometimes I walk right along the Danube, then I detour into the floodplain forest …

Here you can feel the power of the forest up close. Only the rustling of the trees and the chirping of birds “disturb” the silence of this stage. When crossing an oxbow lake over a boardwalk, your hiking boots stay dry. Narrow clearings, larger pools and smaller burns ensure variety on the tour. Back to the Danube and the Faiminger …

Today we continued on the original route, having completed the 2 km approach from the train station through the small town of Offingen. That was something completely different! And much nicer than yesterday! We immediately continued on paths through the floodplain forest until we reached part of the Danube again. We passed the decommissioned Grundremmingen nuclear power plant, which is …

Today, too, there were many impressions along the actual trail that are worth commenting on.

First, there were the occasional encounters along the way. I believe that these can be the spice of a hike, if you can exchange ideas with others.

Route: only the stadium lap (400 meters) is missing, but almost the original route from before (42 years ago, there was still a walking competition, later a half-marathon run (a little later a shortened route (there were almost 1.4 km missing for the half-marathon At that time they were not good at measuring (bicycles) hi, hi, hi, the route was …
