Description

If you're looking for a truly rewarding, albeit challenging, touring bicycle adventure through diverse landscapes, the South Cle Elum – Lake Easton State Park loop from Hyak is definitely worth your time. This difficult 61.0-mile (98.2 km) route packs in 1599 feet (487 metres) of elevation gain over an estimated 9 hours and 6 minutes, making it ideal for cyclists with good fitness seeking a substantial day out.

What to expect on South Cle Elum – Lake Easton State Park loop from Hyak

Expect a journey that transitions from forested areas to drier, open terrain as you head eastward from Hyak. The route primarily follows the historic Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, offering glimpses of the majestic Cascade Peaks and passing the tranquil waters of Lake Easton. You'll even cross a high, curved bridge over Cabin Creek. Be prepared for mostly unpaved, compacted gravel surfaces, with some sections of deeper gravel, especially east of Hyak. While the grade generally follows the gentle railroad bed, the segment towards Snoqualmie Pass from Easton does involve more uphill effort. This trail is best suited for mountain bikes or gravel bikes with tires 35mm or wider; thin racing tires won't cut it, and you might find yourself pushing your bike on some unpaved segments.

Planning your visit

The Hyak trailhead provides a convenient starting point with a large parking area, restrooms, and water, making it an excellent base for your ride. While not directly on this loop, it's worth noting that the nearby Snoqualmie Tunnel, a significant feature of the Palouse to Cascades Trail, is typically closed from November 1st to May 1st. For access to Washington State Parks, including Lake Easton State Park, remember to have your Discover Pass.
