Schwerin train station
Often only the princess lives in the palace. In Schwerin, the palace belongs to all train passengers. Behind the magnificent facade of the Wilhelminian building, travelers at Schwerin train station can see a tidy interior. Signage and information are exemplary,
even non-locals can find their way around.
Brief history of the train station:
1847: Schwerin receives its first rail connection with the line to Hagenow
1889/90: The current train station building is built in the representative Wilhelminian style on the site of the previous building from 1847.
1920s: Construction of the station underpass and lowering of the entrance hall
December 2005: After three and a half years of modernization, the train station was officially reopened.

Old Garden, Schwerin

Highlight • Historical Site

The Old Garden is a central, representative square in Schwerin, which is surrounded by magnificent buildings. It is bordered on two sides by Lake Schwerin and the Burgsee.

Both the layout of the square itself and the buildings located there and adjacent to it - Schwerin Castle, Theater, Museum, Old Palace and State Chancellery - are listed in the city of Schwerin's list of monuments.

The history of the square's use probably begins as early as the 9th century in the vicinity of the Obodrite Castle Zuarin. Over time, the use of the square changed several times until it became modern for meetings and events and as a tourist center.

The Victory Column was built in 1874 and is located in the immediate vicinity of Schwerin Castle. It is to commemorate the fallen Mecklenburg soldiers in the Franco-German War of 1870/1871.
Gustav Willgohs created the victory column from captured French artillery. The bronze guns were melted down and poured into a mold to form the victory column.

Schwerin Castle

Highlight • Castle

This magnificent jewel is located directly on Lake Schwerin. Schwerin Castle is certainly one of the most beautiful in Germany. I couldn't decide which side is the prettiest. Whether at sunset from the lake side or with the beautifully landscaped castle park in the foreground. After the walk, you can also visit the fairytale castle from the inside as part of a guided tour.

The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Johannis in Schwerin is the only medieval building in the state capital. It is also the only real cathedral in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The 117.5 meter high west tower, which was built in the neo-Gothic style, is also the tallest church tower in East Germany. The church tower can be climbed with its 220 steps. Here the visitor has a breathtaking view over Schwerin and the Schwerin lake landscape.

After visiting the railway museum, we took a short tour of Schwerin with Benni. Unfortunately, it's a bit too warm today. The best weather for eating an ice cream. There's a lot going on at the castle 🏰 again, because we're having another "Historic Castle Festival". 5 p.m. "The Finale Grand Duke's New Clothes" fashion show by the castle association.

Took a trip to Schwerin today. Originally I just wanted to visit the railway museum. Interesting things and discussions have taken place. It is a small but fine museum, unfortunately only open on certain days.

On the crossing to Rügen we took a short trip to Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The castle is beautiful and the old town is also worth seeing. And the pasta with porcini mushrooms in truffle cream sauce was also excellent 😋😋😋

Unfortunately we had very bad weather, only briefly blue skies for a few minutes. Therefore a city tour by bus was announced. Halfway through we got out and ran, because now the weather was better. The queue for the visit to the castle was so long and without any progress that we gave up for today. Hopefully tomorrow, if the …
