The various elements and figures symbolize the facets of the Attendorn carnival: The "Bütt", where every visitor can make his or her speeches and from which a jet of water slides into the fountain when entering; the wagon with the city coat of arms and the indispensable cat (Kattfiller), representing the street carnival; Mariechen as a sign for dance sport; as well as the "Kattfiller", the symbolic figure of the Attendorn carnival. The basic shape of the fountain basin on the corner of Niederste Strasse and Schemperstrasse is confetti.
The fountain was created by the artist Thomas Schütte from Schmallenberg. The idea came from the "Initiative Fools' Fountain". The fountain is part of the Leader funding project for the sculpture trail "Customs and City History in Attendorn".

A first predecessor building was erected in the 9th century, this was expanded in the 11th century by the 2nd building, rebuilt around 1230 as the 3rd building in the style of a three-conch complex. After the monastery was dissolved as a result of secularisation, the city of Attendorn was allowed to use the building together with the garden, inventory and other accessories for the municipal progymnasium from 1822. Even today, the Rivius-Gymnasium, the highest school in the city of Attendorn, is housed there. The monastery church stood empty until 1838, when it was used as an armory by a Landwehr battalion. From 1888 to 1898 it again had no function. In 1898, Franciscans of the Saxon Order Province (Saxonia) rented the church until it was damaged in an air raid in 1945 and then largely destroyed in a munitions explosion after the end of the war. Despite the protests of some citizens, it was demolished in 1951. The town hall and the headquarters of the Sparkasse Attendorn were built in their place. The portal was preserved and is to be rebuilt on the monastery square by 2022.
