This informative quiz board is located in the middle of the beautiful landscape. It is about nature and how we influence it with our actions.

Harz View Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is, so to speak, the new Mackenröder Spitze. The tower used to stand a little further south and had to make way for the Bundeswehr's small radar post on the fenced-in property that is now used by the city's forestry office.
The panorama over the Goldene Mark to the Brocken and to the Ohm Mountains east of Duderstadt is always different depending on the time of day and year and is usually very beautiful.

There used to be an observation tower here, similar to the Harz view tower to the north, which did not exist at the time. The tower had to give way to the small Bundeswehr base, whose buildings and fences with parts of a light barrier cannot be overlooked here. A small mobile radar system was stationed here near the border. The Göttingen Forestry Office later took over this property. A city forest office manager devoted himself to his vintage car handicrafts. A few meters to the north is a small refuge that is interesting for hikers or groups of hikers. Several photos reflect this well.

Mackenröder Cliffs

Highlight • Gorge

It's geologically very interesting here. The terrain is in motion. Over the years, material breaks off the steep face here and there, so that fortunately it shifts very slowly towards the west. Under the layer of lime is the red, that is the layer of the upper red sandstone. Red becomes slightly mushy with moisture. The weight of the limestone layer results in redness (earth glaciers), which can be guessed below the steep edge.
The path along the cliffs is just fun. It is interspersed with roots and small slopes. There is still a safety distance to the edge of the steep face.
I once received a cross-sectional sketch of the geological situation from Professor Dieter Meischner (†) privately. This is inserted under photos.

A beautiful path (unfortunately asphalted) lined with old fruit trees.

Please note here, however.
The Kerstlingeröder field is a nature reserve.
Picking the fruit is therefore FORBIDDEN.
There are many fruit tree avenues in Göttingen and the region where picking is permitted. The city of Göttingen also has information on this.
