Hotel Handelshof, Essen

Highlight • Historical Site

The Handelshof, a historic hotel and restaurant building, is located opposite Essen's main train station.

The new Krupp-Thyssen administration building is located two kilometers northwest of the main train station, embedded in the new Krupp Park. The new administration headquarters has architectural quality. The park is lavishly designed, but will need to develop for another one or two decades to have a good effect as a landscape park.

Grillo Theater Essen

Highlight • Monument

The Grillo Theater in downtown Essen was opened in 1892 as a city theater, making it one of the oldest theaters in the Ruhr area. The city theater was donated by the Essen industrialist Friedrich Grillo.

The building is designed in the neo-baroque style. With the Theaterplatz, the Grillo Theater forms a beautiful, peaceful oasis in the middle of the city.

Lichtburg Essen

Highlight • Monument

In the Federal Republic of Germany and beyond the borders of our state, the Essen cinema is known and famous. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the Lichtburg is a premiere cinema and, on the other hand, because this film theater has the largest cinema hall in Germany. This jewel with 1250 seats is located in the middle of Essen's inner city and continues to cast a spell over cinema fans. The film theater also offers space for a stage behind the roll-up screen, so that the hall can also be used for theater and cabaret events. The building is a historical monument. In the basement of the building there is another cinema hall with 150 seats. The Lichtburg Film Theater in Essen opened on October 18, 1928. The cinema is an early example of the "Aryanization" of Jewish property during the National Socialist era in Germany. As early as 1933/1934, the Jewish operator, Berlin publisher, entrepreneur and co-founder of German film publishing Karl Wolffsohn was killed by massive pressure from the NSDAP in Essen -Gauleiter Josef Terboven was forced to sell the cinema to Universum Film AG, far below its value.

Since 2006, a commemorative plaque on the Lichtburg has commemorated Karl Wolffsohn. It was unveiled in the presence of the grandson, the historian Michael Wolffsohn. He is also the head of the Lichtburg Foundation. in Berlin with a German-Turkish-Jewish cultural center.

Market Church, Essen

Highlight • Religious Site

The Essen Market Church, known as Gertrudis Church until the end of the 19th century, is located in the Essen city center on the market, the original Essen market square, which was once the economic, political and religious center of the city. The hall church, which was originally Romanesque and, after partial reconstruction, became late Gothic, was the first Protestant church in Essen.

Limbecker Street

Highlight • Structure

One of the main shopping streets in downtown Essen. The street used to end at the Limbecker Tor, one of the four large Essen city gates (in the direction of Dorsten-Lembeck). Today there is a large shopping center here. Unfortunately a lot of vacancies on the street.
