Phoenix West Former Blast Furnace

Highlight • Monument

Phoenix-West blast furnace (formerly Hoerder Verein, last operated by Friedrich Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp, decommissioned in 1998). The area is currently in the process of being turned into a modern technology plant. Some of the remaining structures of the ironworks are intended to be incorporated into the new facilities, while others are supposed to be turned into a museum site. One blast furnace has been preserved, a second one has been mostly dismantled, only the outer frame, the Cowper stoves and the lower portion of the furnace itself remain. The site is currently only accessible to the public as part of guided tours along a walkway called the "Skywalk Dortmund". However, unlike other sites in Germany, the inside of the remains of blast furnace 6 is accessible to the public.
The outer frame of blast furnace 6 is considered for a re-purposed use. A colorful light installation illuminates the plant at special occasions in the summer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_preserved_historic_blast_furnaces#Germany_2

Phoenix-West Blast Furnace

Highlight • Monument

The Phoenix-West blast furnace plant, founded in the 19th century, is a testament to Dortmund's industrial past and is located in the Hörde district. It symbolizes the steel production that has long been a defining feature of the Ruhr region. After the plant was closed at the end of the 20th century, the site was converted into an innovative commercial and recreational area, with the historic industrial structures being preserved as monuments.

Phoenix Lake

Highlight • Lake

There used to be a huge industrial area here, the Phoenix Ost steelworks. It was recultivated, a lake, a residential area and a local recreation area were created. Today you can relax here and at the same time you are reminded of the past of this place and the Ruhr area itself.

"The smelting man"

Not just a bronze sculpture, but a work of art with history.

1953, the Hörder Neumarkt was embellished by a new fountain.
At its edge, on a pedestal, stood a steel cooker made of bronze
"The Hüttenmann", created by the Dortmunder Sculptor Friedel Dornberg.
Six years later, he suddenly disappeared from the marketplace. The Hörder citizens spoke of a night and fog action because they were not informed in advance. The hut man was simply "transferred" to the Dortmund Central Station to greet the incoming visitors to the Federal Garden Show. Later he had his place in the Westfalenpark for a few years, overlooking the blast furnaces. It is thanks to the local historian Willi Garth that he was able to return to his old homeland in 2009. About 300 m as the crow flies from the former location on Hörder Neumarkt, he now "guards" the Phoenix West area as a typical figure of a bygone era.

Having cycled and run so often in Dortmund, we have never been to the Niere - a currently roughened and broken cycle path - is currently being renovated and is absolutely idyllic
