The Brambauerschaft consisted only of individual farms. The Protestant peasant children had to go to school in Brechten, but the Catholic children went to Waltrop.
Coal mining began shortly before 1900 and more and more people moved here. The village of Brambauer only came into being when the Achenbach colliery was put into operation. Brambauer's growing crowd of children was initially taught in a tavern. From 1906 Brambauer's children could finally attend the completed "Auguste Victoria School". This was the school's first name. Auguste Victoria was the last German empress. Because of her great social commitment, she was very popular in Germany.
Today's school name "Wittekindschule" is derived from "Widukind", the name of a Westphalian nobleman who was Duke of Saxony in the 8th century.
