Description
The Great Allegheny Passage – McKeesport loop from Versailles is one of those road cycling routes that offers a smooth, engaging ride, especially if you're looking for an alternative to the main GAP. This moderate 19.4-mile (31.2 km) loop, with 505 feet (154 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 33 minutes, making it a great option for a focused ride that blends industrial heritage with river views.
What to expect on The Great Allegheny Passage – McKeesport loop from Versailles
As you cycle this route, you'll experience a unique blend of scenery. The trail offers glimpses of the Youghiogheny River, particularly at its northern end, and takes you through urban neighborhoods. You'll pass close to local amenities along Walnut Street in McKeesport and skirt the Dead Man's Hollow Wildlife Preserve. While much of the ride is smooth and recently repaved, be prepared for a notable 8% grade climb on a paved surface from Dead Man's Hollow up to River Ridge Road. This loop is ideal for cyclists who appreciate a mix of natural and industrial landscapes and want a mostly paved, accessible ride with one significant climb.
Planning your visit
This loop is a distinct alternative for GAP riders, allowing you to bypass a potentially challenging uphill section of the main trail. McKeesport is a recognized "trail town" with amenities like restaurants and a bike shop, particularly around the "Feed Zone" in Christy Park. The recently resurfaced sections in 2024 ensure a smooth ride. While road bikes with thinner tires (23-25mm) are suitable for this paved loop, if you plan to venture onto other crushed limestone sections of the broader GAP, wider tires (32mm or more) are often recommended for comfort, especially in wet conditions.
