Witch Hole Pond

Highlight • Lake

Witch Hole Pond was part of the first land donation to Acadia National Park. The area was ravaged by a fire in 1947, and harbors the ruins of an old estate, saw mill, quarry, and horse stables. The name "Witch Hollow" was around long before then, and its origins are a mystery.

Halfmoon Pond

Highlight • Lake

Halfmoon Pond is another reservoir along the Witch Hole Pond Carriage Road. It's one of the smaller reservoirs within Acadia National Park, but it attracts a lot of different wildlife and is a picturesque spot off the side of the trail.

The carriage trails around Eagle Lake have accessible lakeside walking and biking for all ages and ability levels. Sections of the carriage roads at the south end of the lake are steeper and more difficult. Eagle lake is an ancient glacial lake formed by the last ice age and the second largest body of fresh water in the park.

Witch Hole Pond Carriage Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Acadia is possibly the best National Park to explore on a bike. Witch Hole Pond Carriage Road is one of many throughout the park with excellent surfacing, making it accessible to the whole family. Of course the autumn leaves are stunning, but don't feel like it's not worth visiting the rest of the year. Each season has it's own unique charms and attractions.
