Description
If you're looking for an immersive way to experience Zion National Park's iconic canyon, the Temple of Sinawava – Zion National Park cycling loop from Zion Human History Museum is a fantastic choice. This touring cycling route is rated difficult, covering 26.6 miles (42.8 km) with 1806 feet (550 metres) of elevation gain, and typically takes around 2 hours and 49 minutes. It's perfect for cyclists seeking a challenging ride with unparalleled views, offering a unique perspective on Zion's towering landscapes.
What to expect on Temple of Sinawava – Zion National Park loop from Zion Human History Museum
The journey begins near the Zion Human History Museum, quickly joining the paved Pa'rus Trail, which offers tranquil views alongside the Virgin River. This section is mostly flat, a gentle warm-up before you connect to the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. As you pedal deeper into the canyon, you'll be treated to stunning views of towering red rock cliffs and vibrant landscapes, looking straight up at thousand-foot sandstone walls. While the initial two miles of the Scenic Drive are steep, the road generally becomes more level after passing the Court of the Patriarchs, with a gradual incline towards the Temple of Sinawava itself. This massive natural amphitheater, carved by the Virgin River, features dramatic rusty red and chocolate brown cliffs, often adorned with waterfalls and hanging gardens. The return trip is largely downhill, providing a welcome relief after the climb, making it a rewarding workout for those on a standard bicycle.
Planning your visit
A major advantage of this Zion National Park cycling route is that from March to November, private vehicles are restricted on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, meaning you'll primarily share the road with shuttle buses. This creates an intimate experience with the canyon, allowing you to stop anywhere to take in the views, unlike being confined to shuttle stops. Bike racks are conveniently located at major shuttle stops and trailheads. Cyclists must pull over and come to a complete stop to allow shuttle buses to pass safely. For a more comfortable ride, consider cycling in the early morning or evening to avoid heavy shuttle traffic and the heat. Note that while regular bicycles can be transported on shuttle racks for a mostly downhill return, e-bikes cannot.
