Church of the Assumption of Mary (Illmensee)

Highlight • Religious Site

The first mentioned church in Illmensee can be found in the year 1275. At that time it was probably a Romanesque style church, which was later given a Gothic look. The neo-Gothic elements of the church were added around 1860 and today it is considered a neo-Gothic building.

Illmensee Bell Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

The legend of the Illmenseer bell

Before the Thirty Years War, Illmensee had a big bell with a splendid sound. When the Swedes came, the citizens sank their bell in the lake.

After the war, the community was completely impoverished. She had other worries, and the spot where the bell had sunk was forgotten. When, in better times, the people of Illmense remembered their bell, they couldn't find it.

One day a traveling scholar came to the village and offered to fetch the bell from the lake with the help of 30 men, whom he imposed absolute silence on. In fact, the bell was found. You were halfway out of the water by the time it struck noon.

One of the men said a prayer of thanks, others joined in and the bell sank back to the bottom. Since then, all searches have been in vain. Only on nights of the full moon can one hear how dark tones rise from the lake.

June 27, 2025,🇩🇪 Rund-Wanderung um den Ruschweiler See
We met up here with our dear friends from the Schlaubetal valley in Brandenburg and hiked through the beautiful surroundings near Illmensee above Lake Constance. We were very busy trying not to step on the little frogs that hopped across the paths in droves.
The landscape was beautiful and almost deserted. We enjoyed every inch of it.
A special experience …

Round trip around the Volzsee and the Ruschweilersee. 😐
Lots of asphalt and very unkempt paths, which are overgrown with nettles and blackberries. Access to the Volzsee is not possible and to the Ruschweilersee only in 3 - 4 places. The round trip is not recommended😐😐😐

Second round today - with the nice weather, a second round was necessary.
The second one wasn't quite as photogenic.

Note about the trail: The second part of the trail is just a path! Partly through forest and undergrowth. After a rainy period, my shoes sank completely into the mud.
