St. Jürgen Monastery, Rambin

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Jürgen (often mistakenly referred to as Rambin Monastery) is a building complex in Rambin on the island of Rügen. It goes back to a hospital from the 14th century.
The St. Jürgen chapel in the eastern part dates back to the 15th century. This is currently used for exhibitions. In the western part there are residential and commercial spaces.
There are four residential buildings from the 19th century on the site, some of which are inhabited. There are also meadows with fruit trees.

In 1334, the Stralsund councilor Gödecke von Wickede founded the St. Jürgen vor Rambin Hospital for lepers (lepers) and equipped it with some property.
In 1339 this foundation was confirmed by the Bishop of Roskilde.
Since 1412 at the latest, it has been inhabited by poor people who, for a small entrance fee, acquired the right to live there for life. The hospital acquired additional land and income and became the wealthiest and most important on the island of Rügen.
A new chapel was built around 1440/80, the eastern part of which has been preserved. After the Reformation, the chapel was profaned and the priest's house was abandoned; around 1550 six poor people still lived there. Even in the following decades it only existed on a modest scale. It was probably further degraded during the Thirty Years' War and abandoned around the 1670s.
After 1720 the poorhouse was revived again. In the following decades, it again developed considerable economic prosperity with the old properties. In the 19th century, new houses, a bakery and other buildings were built. In 1946 the land was expropriated. The apartments were then generally rented out.
The area is in need of renovation. In 2020, the house association “Leben ins Kloster Rambin e. V.” was founded.

St. Johannis Church Rambin

Highlight • Religious Site

The brick building consists of several, clearly different elements, which goes back to the construction times in different eras. The wooden tower is probably the most recent part.

Unfortunately, we were only able to see it from the outside.
